  15. <p>DIED. Heinrich Boll, 67, Nobel-prize winning (1972) West
  16. German author whose gentle but relentless attacks on tyranny of
  17. all kinds informed the short stories, essays and 18 novels that
  18. brought him acclaim and popularity in the East bloc as well as
  19. the West and provided unfailing moral guideposts for his
  20. countrymen; of complications of arteriosclerosis; in
  21. Hurtgenwald, West Germany. Brought up in a deeply religious
  22. Roman Catholic family resistant to Nazism, he served six years
  23. as a Wehrmacht conscript on both fronts. He emerged as a
  24. pacifist and foe of all establishments, governmental, religious
  25. and bureaucratic, and began writing novels of protest against
  26. war The Train was on Time, 1949; Adam, Where Art Thou, 1951),
  27. then went on to describe and deride the materialistic,
  28. dehumanizing postwar society in such works as Billiards at
  29. Half-Past Nine (1959), The Clown (1963), and Group Portrait with
  30. Lady (1971). A crusader for the freedom of writers everywhere
  31. especially under Communism, Boll was considered Germany's most
  32. influential writer since Thomas Mann, and in conscious
  33. evocations of his predecessor he was often called "the
  34. conscience of the nation."
